We'll answer your questions like -
> Where is Hemple grown?
> Is it organic?
> I know it's allergy friendly, but is it gluten free?
> How is the raw seed processed into hulled seeds, protein and oil?
> Does it contain THC - the the psychoactive cannabinoid?
First. Where is Hemple grown?
You might remember Cade our founder, he's there with one of our farmers, George. We're lucky to work with such an impressive and innovative group of farmers from North Western NSW, the Western District of Victoria and Tassie.
How do you choose your farmers?
We make sure they're good people - that's for sure!
We look for farmers who prefer to work spray free and own land that's away from wheat crops to ensure our gluten testing comes back clear.
As the legalisation was a recent decision, it's a new food crop for many Aussie farmers, so a lot of people have been keen to experiment and learn about growing the crop on their land.
We love people who want to test, learn and experiment with us.
Here's an example of two different strains of planting seeds, on the same property, grown in the same conditions, but with drastically different growth rates. You can see the left hand side has germinated considerably better than the right.
Are Hemple's farmers organic?
Let's talk about 'organic certification' for a moment. Australian Certified Organic has a three year conversion process for primary production (that's for farmers growing crops).
No farmers in Australia today have been growing hempfoods long enough to secure this accreditation.
We do practice sustainable farming practices and are spray free, working towards organic in 2021!
What about the hempseed products shelf which do hold this accreditation, you ask?
This will be imported products - usually from Canada or China.
Is Hemple THC free?
Hemple is tested and certified low low low THC, which meets the rigorous Australian food grade standards. So it won't get you high and won't make you fail a roadside drug test.
What most people don't realise is that the cannabinoids are actually found in the flower of the plant, not the seed which is what you eat as a food.
How do you get from a raw seed to Hemple Oil?
We simply cold press and filter our Hempseed oil. It's a really simple process that you can think of like a juicing machine.
The fruit goes through the juicer, juice and pulp come out. Same with a cold press of the hempseed. Seed goes in, oil and fibrous protein are separated.
The reason we cold press is to ensure the integrity of the omega 3s and 6s are maintained by reducing oxidation so you get optimal health benefits from the oil.
What happens to the fibrous protein pulp?
The great thing about working with this seed is that nothing's wasted. The fibrous protein pulp is cold milled and sifted to a fine powder - either retaining more of the healthy, insoluble fibre rich hull in Hemple High Fibre or sifting for a higher protein content like in Hemple Raw, our 50% protein with 15g bioavailable protein in every serve.
Can I see how your hempseeds are hulled to make Hemple Hearts?
Here's the run down - don't blink!
What about Hemple super blends - where do the added superfoods come from?
As much as possible we aim to source organic ingredients from the best producers globally so enhance every super blend.
Hemple's Divine Vanilla blend includes:
> ground organic vanilla bean from New Zealand for a real vanilla taste
> organic Peruvian sun dried black maca root powder - the rarest and most potent of the maca family (also red and cream maca). Traditionally used by natives for centuries to boost libido, improve memory, concentration and focus, improve their bone strength and density
> ground organic psyllium husks grown in India, one of the world's biggest growers of psyllium husks, a form of soluble fibre made from the husks of the Plantago ovata plant's seeds.
That's all folks!
